Philipp Lahm has been at the heart of a national controversy in Germany following the publication of his autobiography. Lahm criticized his former coaches Rudi Voeller, Juergen Klinsmann and Louis Van Gaal in the book.

When Felix Magath pointed out that the Germany captain might have done so for the money, Lahm pointed out that the profits will go to his foundation for underprivileged children.

Joachim Loew spoke to his captain about the issue but clearly stated that Lahm will stay captain of the national side. Lahm is just one of the talented stars in Loew’s team. Loew rarely has a selection headache; however, his bench will be less talent-laden than usual due to a series of injuries.

Germany takes on Austria on Friday night. Austria is placed fourth in their group. Austria’s coach Dietmar Constantini called up Marko Arnautovic at the last minute following some good performances by the attacker for club side Werder Bremen.

Sven Bender picked up an injury while playing for Dortmund and turned down Loew’s invitation at the last minute. Prior to him, Mario Gomez also pulled out from the squad. The German played was injured in a mid-week clash against Zurich in the Champions League. He scored a hat-trick for Bayern in the Bundesliga despite playing with an injury.

Loew thus had only one out and out striker in his squad. He decided to call up experienced striker and Stuttgart captain Cacau to replace Gomez. Sami Khedira has not been called up due to injury. Another player who pulled out recently was Marco Reus. This is the third time that Reus has pulled out of the German squad with injury.

Juan Baumgartlinger, Christian Fuchs, Martin Harnik, Emmanuel Pogatetz and Erwin Hoffer will know the German squad members well as they all ply their trade in the Bundesliga. Fuchs has performed well for his new club, Schalke following a good season at Mainz.

The reverse fixture in Vienna ended in a 1-2 defeat for the Austrians. Mario Gomez opened the scoring on that occasion. An own goal from Arne Friedrich brought Austria on level terms before Gomez scored in the final minute from a Philipp Lahm cross.

Ilkay Guendogan and Dennis Aogo have been left out of the squad this time. Due to Rene Adler’s injury, one of the finest keepers in the Bundesliga, Ron-Robert Zieler of Hanover has been called up.

According to their coach, Austria will use a counter-attacking approach. Joachim Loew is not taking anything for granted though. He said:

“Yes, we have a big lead in the group and our position is very good, but we have not qualified yet for Poland and Ukraine.”
