Japan-Nth Korea game given green light

SAITAMA, Japan - Japan's opening World Cup qualifier against North Korea will go ahead as planned on Friday after initial fears it would need to be put back a day due to an approaching typhoon.

The Japan Football Association said Thursday the game will proceed despite Typhoon Talus being forecast to come close to Japanese coastal areas on Friday night.

Both Japan and North Korea qualified for the 2010 World Cup and will be favourites to progress from Group C, which also includes Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Japan, the reigning Asian champion, is unbeaten since Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni took over a year ago.

However, North Korea could provide a sterner test in Saitama, and Japan had called in all of its big-name European stars such as Shinji Kagawa of Borussia Dortmund and CSKA Moscow's Keisuke Honda.

However Honda was ruled out with a knee injury, while Kengo Nakamura will be missing due to a broken toe and Inter Milan defender Yuto Nagatomo is absent while recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

"Japan did very well at the (2010) World Cup and we won the Asian Cup so teams are very motivated when they play us," said Zaccheroni. "There are a lot of expectations of us but we have to show character, good balance and show no fear ... We must prepare well and turn pressure into power."

In the other Group C game, Uzbekistan will make the relatively short journey to Tajikistan. The host is fortunate to be playing at all and only made it after Syria was disqualified after fielding an ineligible player in the earlier qualification rounds.

Russia have no margin for error as FYROM visit

Russia can ill afford a slip-up against the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with the situation exceptionally tight in the battle for UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group B.

• Russia are one of three sides at the top of the section on 13 points going into FYROM's first game since the departure of coach Mirsad Jonuz, whose two-year spell in charge was ended in June following a run of three qualifying defeats.

• That run began with a 1-0 loss against Russia on 12 October. Aleksandr Kerzhakov scored the only goal in Skopje after eight minutes, but Russia had Igor Akinfeev to thank for their third away victory in the section as he saved a second-half penalty from Ilco Naumoski on 72 minutes, Stevica Ristic having earlier hit the bar.

• Russia's record in three games against FYROM reads W3 D0 L0 (W1 D0 L0 at home).

• They first made acquaintances in Skopje on 15 November 2006, when Vladimir Bystrov and Andrey Arshavin registered in a 2-0 success for the visitors. The corresponding fixture in Moscow then ended 3-0, Vasili Berezutski putting Russia ahead before Arshavin and Kerzhakov wrapped up the victory despite Vladimir Gabulov's 70th-minute dismissal.

• Teams from the two nations have met in three two-legged UEFA club competition ties, with the Russian outfits winning two to FYROM's one – FK Vardar's 3-2 aggregate triumph against PFC CSKA Moskva in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

• In terms of individual games, the record for clubs from Russia reads W2 D3 L1 (W2 D0 L1 at home).

Armenia aim to close gap in Andorra

Armenia will look to trouble the top sides in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group B as they travel to Andorra, having beaten the back markers comfortably back on 12 October.

• In that first meeting, Gevorg Ghazaryan gave the home side a dream start with a fourth-minute opener and goals from Henrik Mkhitaryan and Yura Movsisyan added to Armenia's tally before the break to put the result beyond doubt. Marcos Pizzelli then struck on 52 minutes to send his side temporarily to the top of their qualifying section.

• Armenia are fourth in the pool, five points adrift of the top three – who are level on 13 points.

• Andorra are one of four teams yet to pick up a point in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying along with Malta, San Marino and Wales.

• Andorra's seven previous matches against Armenia have ended W0 D1 L6 (W0 D1 L3 at home). The only time they avoided defeat was in a 0-0 friendly draw on 7 February 2007. The aggregate score in games between the nations is 17-2 in Armenia’s favour.

Belgium wary of Baku banana skin

Having already beaten Turkey in Baku, Azerbaijan will look to knock Georges Leekens' Belgium out of their stride when the second-ranked side in UEFA EURO 2012 Group A head east.

• Berti Vogts' men surprised Turkey 1-0 back in October, but have lost their three qualifiers since, including a 4-1 away defeat by Belgium on 29 March.

• When the countries met in Brussels, Ruslan Abışov took four minutes to cancel out Jan Vertonghen's opening goal, but Timmy Simons restored Belgium's lead from the penalty spot just after the half-hour mark. Nacer Chadli then struck in first-half added time, with Jelle Vossen rounding off the win with 16 minutes remaining.

• The teams are meeting for the fourth time, with Belgium having beaten Azerbaijan 3-0 in Brussels and 1-0 in Baku in qualifying for the 2008 UEFA European Championship.

• Their first meeting came on 11 October 2006, when a Simons penalty gave the hosts the lead before Azerbaijan's Yuri Muzika was shown a straight red card just before half-time. Kevin Vandenbergh and Moussa Dembélé completed the scoring, though the latter was dismissed in the closing minutes.

• The rematch on 21 November the following year was settled by Luigi Pieroni's strike.

• Azerbaijan coach Vogts played in West Germany's 2-1 win against Belgium at the 1972 UEFA European Championship, and masterminded four wins against Belgium in his time as coach of the reunited Germany.

Finland seek Moldova satisfaction

Finland will look to avenge a defeat against Moldova in their opening UEFA EURO 2012 Group E game, but a finals place looks out of reach for both sides.

• Moldova beat ten-man Finland 2-0 on 3 September last year; Sami Hyypiä was shown a straight red card on 36 minutes for a challenge on Viorel Frunza, with substitute Alexandru Suvorov and Anatolie Doroş scoring after the interval to give the hosts a first competitive win since a November 2007 encounter with Hungary.

• Finland's record in three games against Moldova reads W1 D1 L1 (W1 D0 L0 at home). New Finland coach Mixu Paatalainen scored the winner in Finland's lone victory.

• Their only previous encounters came in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2000, with the first of them, in Helsinki on 5 September 1998, an eventful occasion.

• Joonas Kolkka put Richard Møller-Nielsen's Finland ahead after eight minutes, but Igor Oprea swiftly turned the tables with goals in the tenth and 12th minutes for Ivan Danilianţ's men. Jonatan Johansson then struck just before the break to level and Paatelainen hit what proved to be the winner for Finland on 64 minutes.

• Moldova ended that game with ten men following Ghenadie Pusca's late dismissal.

• The return fixture in Chisinau ended in a 0-0 draw.

• Titleholders from the two nations met in the second qualifying round of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League, with Moldova's FC Sheriff winning 1-0 home and away against FC International Turku.

Lithuania and Liechtenstein tangle again

The lowest-placed sides in Group I meet again in Kaunas, mindful that they are set for two further meetings after being drawn together in the same qualifying section for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

• Liechtenstein are unlikely to complain about that given they ended a four-year wait for a competitive win against Lithuania in their first Group I meeting on 3 June. A Lithuania side decimated by injuries and suspensions went down 2-0, Philipe Erne's superb early opener and a Michele Polverino strike giving Hans-Peter Zaugg's men the points.

• "What we've achieved is unbelievable," said goalkeeper Benjamin Büchel after that rare Liechtenstein success. "You don't see this every day. It was a superb performance by everyone, but especially in defence where we were incredibly strong today. The whole team just gave 100%. I was constantly hoping we would not concede and in the end the whole thing is just incredible."

• It was only Liechtenstein's eighth victory in 123 competitive matches, and their first since October 2007.

• Lithuania's record in three games against Liechtenstein reads W2 D0 L1 (W1 D0 L0 at home).

• The nations' only meetings prior to the UEFA EURO 2012 preliminaries came in 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying, with Lithuania winning 2-1 in Vilnius on 9 October 1996 and 2-1 in Eschen-Mauren on 30 April the following year.

Israel bid to leapfrog Greece

Israel will be looking to climb further up towards the summit of UEFA EURO 2012 Group F when section leaders Greece come to Tel-Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium.

• Greece are a point clear of Croatia and third-ranked Israel, but Luis Fernandez's side have played a game more than the top two.

• Greece prevailed 2-1 in Piraeus in the sides' first Group F meeting on 12 October last year. Dimitris Salpingidis put Fernando Santos's men ahead in the 22nd minute with a neat, lofted finish but Israel levelled 14 minutes after half-time when Greek defender Nikos Spyropoulos turned Roberto Colautti's cross past his own goalkeeper. However, Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis slotted home from the penalty spot just after the hour mark to clinch the three points.

• Israel's record in 14 games against Greece is W2 D5 L7 (W1 D4 L2 at home – and W1 D3 L2 in Tel Aviv).

• Greece's last four home matches against Israel – friendlies on 28 March 1990 and 24 January 1996, as well as their most recent FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter in Heraklion on 1 April 2009 and their first Group F meeting – all ended in 2-1 wins. Their last two away trips to Israel produced 1-1 draws.

• The teams first locked horns on 1 November 1953 in Athens, with Greece prevailing 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier. The return fixture in Tel Aviv then produced a 2-0 victory for the away side, and that proved to be their last competitive meeting for over 50 years.

• Prior to the foundation of the state of Israel, Greece contested two World Cup qualifiers against Eretz Israel during the time of the British Mandate for Palestine, winning 3-1 in Tel Aviv on 22 January 1938 and 1-0 in Athens on 20 February the same year.
