Top scorers meet surprise package

Wednesday's meeting between Brazil and Mexico in Pereira promises to be a thrilling and worthy semi-final at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011. Both teams came through their quarter-finals in convincing fashion, even if the Brazilians were taken as far as a penalty shoot-out by Spain.

The stakes
The teams have met three times at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the past, with the honours even so far. The first clash came in 1977 at the inaugural U–20 tournament in Tunisia, and that too was a semi–final, where the Mexicans came out on top courtesy of a 5–3 shoot-out victory. The teams drew 2–2 in Porto 14 years later, with Brazil winning 2–1 in Adelaide two years after that in 1993.

The quarter-final clash between A Seleçãozinha and Spain was a genuine thriller between two sides committed to attack. The South Americans twice took the lead but ultimately edged into the last four on penalties, with in-form keeper Gabriel saving two Spanish spot-kicks. For their part, the Brazil juniors converted all four of their penalties, and will surely be confident should the semi-final go to the sudden-death elimination stage.

Wednesday's match will be the South Americans’ 11th appearance in the semi-finals in their 17th tilt at the global crown. In complete contrast, Mexico have only made the last four on one previous occasion. Brazil are now unbeaten in their last 12 matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, their last defeat coming at the 2007 edition in Canada, when they fell 4–2 to Spain in the Round of 16.

In the Brazilians’ five matches so far in Colombia, Dudu has earned himself the coveted ‘super sub’ mantle with three goals after entering the fray from the bench. The sharp-shooter has clocked up a total of 179 minutes’ playing time, giving him a strike rate of one goal per hour on the field.

Silverware is of course always demanded of Brazil, but the Mexicans could be even more motivated on this occasion, as victory in the final would crown a magnificent recent streak for the nation's footballers. The most junior national team won this year's FIFA U-17 World Cup in front of their home crowd, and the seniors came away with the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, so the U-20 trophy would round off a glorious summer for the Mexican game.

In truth, the Mexican U-20 side made a muted start to the showdown in Colombia, with only one win, against Korea DPR, at the group stage, and a nervy Round of 16 victory over Cameroon on penalties. However, they seem to have peaked at the right time, after going into the quarter-finals as underdogs against the exuberant hosts but recording a fine and fully merited 3-1 triumph.

In one respect, El Tri’s second appearance in the last four is already one for the record books, as they will move onto 49 matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and overtake long-term rivals USA as the CONCACAF nation with the most games in the history of the tournament.

The stat
13 - Brazil have scored 13 goals in Colombia so far, the best total of all four teams still in the tournament. Their five-match haul is more than four times as many as the Portuguese, who have reached the same stage after scoring just three goals in normal and extra time. For the Brazilians, Henrique, Philippe Coutinho and Dudu are all on three goals apiece.

Impenetrable Portugal face France’s bench brigade

France-Portugal is one of the great European fixtures, but the two sides have never actually met at a FIFA U-20 World Cup. The pair have fought out three semi-finals at senior level, and they are encounters that few could forget.

The sides met at the UEFA European Championships of 1984 and 2000, as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, with Les Bleus emerging victorious on all three occasions. The European rivals have also contested two continental finals at youth level, with Portugal winning the UEFA European U-17 Championship in 1996 and France lifting the U-18 trophy in 1997.

Thursday’s semi-final showdown in Colombia already promises to be a spicy affair. Portugal’s U-20s have not picked the ball out of their net for 525 minutes, and Ilidio Vale’s men are creeping ever closer to Brazil’s record of 634 minutes without conceding. Meanwhile, French super sub Alexandre Lacazette has four goals in the competition so far, and Les Bleuets will once again be hoping he can make an impact.

The stakes
France have already made history by reaching the semi-finals, but the reigning European champions will have no intention of bowing out at this late stage. After a shaky start to the tournament, Les Bleuets have grown in stature and recorded a convincing win over a very solid Nigerian side in the quarter-finals.

France have arguably the most organised team in the competition, and they have a real ace up their sleeve in the shape of Alexandre Lacazette. The forward has found the net four times to date and has made a telling contribution in every match so far. One real concern, however, is the condition of Gilles Sunu, who went off with an injury after half an hour against Nigeria.

Portugal’s victory over Argentina will have provided a timely confidence boost, despite the draining combination of extra time and soaring temperatures in Cartagena. A lack of goals has been the main problem for Vale’s men at Colombia 2011. They have only found the net three times, but their lack of potency up front has so far been offset by an incredible defensive record of no goals conceded.

It was 20 years ago in June that Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Joao Pinto and Co won Portugal’s last world title in the U-20 category. The current crop will no doubt be aware of this fact, and they will be hoping to honour the milestone date in the best possible fashion. Servette midfielder Sana will miss the game through suspension, and his absence limits the options available to coach Vale.

The stat
3 – Portugal have only scored three times since the start of Colombia 2011. Only two other teams have ever reached the FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-finals with such a low goal tally: England in 1993 and, interestingly, Portugal in 1989. On that occasion, the Iberians went on to be crowned world champions.

“We now know that we’re here for the full seven matches. We’ll definitely be fighting for a medal, and hopefully for the title. We know the Portuguese side well. We saw them play at the EURO last year, followed them at the Toulon Tournament and have been keeping a close eye on them here,” France coach Francis Smerecki.

It was the expected final at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009. It was many people's dream final for the FIFA World Cup™ one year later. Spain and Brazil didn't meet on those two occasions, but they will engage in battle in a hugely anticipated quarter-final at this FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The stakes
A Seleção and La Roja have met five times in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the former winning three to the latter's two. Two of those encounters came in the tournament's final, with the South Americans emerging triumphant 1-0 26 years ago, when Taffarel, Silas and Muller pocketed gold medals, and in 2003, when a team including Dani Alves and Nilmar edged one comprising Gabi and Andres Iniesta. Spain coach Julen Lopetegui sat on the bench in that 1985 defeat, and he has some key decisions to make before naming his starting XI for the quarter-final. Will Sergio Canales, Daniel Pacheco and Rodrigo, who were all substituted against Korea Republic, keep their places against Brazil, or will the 44-year-old chose to bring in Isco or Alvaro Vazquez, the tournament's four-goal joint-leading marksman? Lopetegui's Brazil counterpart Ney Franco should have less to contemplate after his side cruised to a 3-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, meaning he should unleash the talent of Philippe Coutinho and Oscar on Spain. Their presence will contribute to the certainly that there will be no shortage of talent on show. There will probably be no shortage of goals, given that both these teams have scored 11 in their four outings to date. What remains highly unpredictable is which side will stay in Pereira to face Mexico or Colombia in the semi-finals.

History within grasp of France and Nigeria

Though both teams’ overriding objective is clearly earning a place in the last four of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011, quarter-final opponents France and Nigeria have other compelling reasons for wanting to progress further. The European side have never previously reached the semi-final at this event, while the Africans have the opportunity to extend their flawless record so far.

The stakes
Though France have now won all three of their Round of 16 ties in FIFA U-20 World Cup history, they have never won a quarter-final encounter. On the two occasions they previously reached the last eight, in 1997 and 2001, Les Bleuets were downed by the South American duo of Uruguay and Argentina, respectively.

Despite having yet to find their most flowing football, Francis Smerecki’s charges have shown plenty of character to bounce back from their opening 4-1 mauling by Colombia and rack up three wins in a row. Key to this revival has been the players’ fitness levels, underlined by the fact that five of France’s seven goals have come in the last 20 minutes – including Antoine Griezmann’s winner against Ecuador in the last 16.

Nigeria, for their part, have made history by winning four consecutive games at the finals of a FIFA U-20 World Cup, a first for the west African nation. The only side, alongside hosts Colombia, with a 100 per cent record thus far, the Flying Eagles also have a positive pedigree at this stage of the global U-20 showpiece, having beaten Mexico in 1985, the former Soviet Union in 1989 and the Netherlands in 2005. On the other two occasions they reached the last eight, they lost to Mali and Chile in 1999 and 2007 respectively.

At Colombia 2011 it has been the Nigerians’ attacking play that has really caught the eye, and which arguably makes them slight favourites in Cali. Scorers of 13 goals to this point, deadly trio of Ahmed Musa, Olarenwaju Kayode and Edafe Egbedi have all struck three times to jointly hold second spot in the tournament’s scorers’ charts.

The stat
21 – Edafe Egbedi is one of just 21 players to have scored at the finals of both the FIFA U-17 World Cup and its U-20 equivalent, a select band which includes the likes of Ronaldinho, Seydou Keita and Freddy Adu. At Nigeria 2009, the youngster fired three goals in the hosts’ run to the final, the same tally that he has notched so far here in Colombia.

Old rivals go head-to-head in Bogota

When Colombia and Mexico met in the semi-finals of the Toulon Tournament on 21 June, few would have foreseen a repeat of the fixture just a matter of weeks down the line. Even fewer would have predicted that the pair would be squaring off for a place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-finals. The last time the sides met, Eduardo Lara’s Cafeteros emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. Can they repeat the feat in front of their home crowd, or will El Tri finally take revenge?

The game

The stakes
Colombia go into the quarter-finals on a high, thanks to a memorable, last-gasp victory over Costa Rica in the last 16. James Rodriguez’s penalty deep into second-half stoppage time made it four wins out of four, breathing new life into the Cafeteros and setting up a clash with another CONCACAF side. Eduardo Lara will be without Jeison Murillo, who is suspended after picking up two yellow cards. Pedro Franco, Santiago Arias, James Rodriguez, Juan Cabezas and Didier Moreno will all need to be on their best behaviour, as another booking against Mexico would rule them out of off a possible semi-final appearance.

Mexico have spent more time on the field than their South American opponents, having defeated Cameroon in a gruelling penalty shoot-out in the last 16. El Tri have only found the net four times at the tournament so far, leading coach Juan Carlos Chavez to highlight his side’s lack of potency in front of goal. Nonetheless, he is confident that his men can spring a major upset in Bogota. They will have to do so without Kristian Alvarez, however, who misses the tie through suspension and will need to be replaced in defence. Diago De Buen, Cesar Ibanez and Alan Pulido, meanwhile, are all carrying yellow cards and will need to take extra care against Colombia.

8 – The number of years that have passed since three South American sides last reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Interestingly, at UAE 2003, the trio consisted of Brazil, Argentina and Colombia – the same three sides that have reached the last eight at Colombia 2011.

Clash of the former champions

A glance at the record books shows us that whenever Argentina and Portugal meet at a FIFA U-20 World Cup, one of the teams goes on to lift the trophy.

Saturday's match in Cartagena is the third clash between the sides at the global U-20 showdown, and the South Americans will be hoping for a case of third time lucky, as Portugal are the only team with an undefeated record against the six-time world champions after winning both previous meetings in this category.

The Portuguese celebrated their first victory in 1991, with a team starring the young Luis Figo securing a 3-0 victory against their South American rivals. Argentina fans would rather not be reminded of the match against the eventual champions, as three of their players were shown red cards during the game.

Four years later, Dani scored the winning goal in Doha as the Portuguese won 1-0 at the group stage. Once again, one of the teams went on to claim the trophy, only this time it was Argentina.

The stakes
Portugal have emerged as the tournament’s minimalists after reaching the quarter-finals with only three goals in total. Of the eight remaining teams at this FIFA U-20 World Cup, the Europeans have scored the fewest goals, winning all their games 1-0 with the exception of the opening match.

By comparison, Nigeria are already up to 13 goals, more than four times as many as Portugal. Pacos Ferreira forward Nelson Oliviera is the man of the tournament for the Portuguese so far after contributing two of their three goals, with the third coming from defender Marion Rui. However, coach Ilidio Vale is without both Rui and striker Alex against the South Americans, as both players are suspended after collecting second yellow cards.

Argentina have been more expansive and convincing in Colombia thus far. The South Americans finished the preliminary stage as comfortable group winners with seven points, and have wowed the crowds with some skilful football on the way. Shooting star Erik Lamela has been in scintillating form, and scored twice in the Round of 16 victory over Egypt. However, the playmaker is rated doubtful for Saturday after limping out of the clash with the North Africans with seven minutes to play. Boss Walter Perazzo and his staff will take a late decision on his fitness.

Of the players with two yellow cards to their names, Adrian Martinez is a definite non-starter with suspension, but Roberto Pereya is set to return after serving out his ban.

The stat
405 – Portugal’s Mika is the only keeper in Columbia yet to retrieve the ball from the back of his net. If you include previous tournaments, the Portuguese have now gone 405 minutes without a conceding a goal at a FIFA U-20 World Cup. The last player to pierce the Portuguese rearguard was Arturo Vidal in Chile's 1-0 victory at Canada 2007.

Saudis threaten Brazil advance

Brazil and Saudi Arabia meet for the third time in the FIFA U-20 World Cup on Wednesday. Of the previous two matches between the two, A Seleçãozinha won one and drew the other, and there is every reason to expect a close encounter in Barranquilla after both sides advanced from the group phase in some style.

The stakes
Brazil began a tournament many are expecting them to win with an underwhelming draw against Egypt before hitting their stride with big victories over Austria and Panama. Nevertheless, coach Ney Franco does have some concerns, especially at the back, having been forced to make two first-half substitutions in Brazil’s final group game against the Panamanians in a bid to address their defensive failings.

Franco is pondering whether to stick with the players who came on then, and push makeshift full-back Danilo into a more familiar midfield role. He has no such problems up front, where Henrique, Philippe Coutinho, Oscar and the versatile Casemiro have been carving out chance after chance with their snappy passing and fluid movement, which could yet provide the key to the country’s fifth world title at this level.

Brazil’s back-line will need to be at its tightest against the dangerous Saudis. Prompted by the pacy duo of Ibrahim Alibrahim and Yahya Dagriri, the Saudis scored eight goals in their opening two group games, seven of them by different players, before turning in a listless display against Nigeria, one that left coach Khalid Alkoroni an unhappy man. Even so, the Middle Easterners had already qualified for the last 16 by then (for the first time ever at the FIFA U-20 World Cup), and are justifiably confident they can cause an upset.

The stat
17 - The number of times that Brazil have appeared at the FIFA U-20 World Cup finals and the number of times they have reached the second round. On only one occasion have they been knocked out in the last 16, however, at Canada 2007.

“We need to make a few adjustments for the next round because whoever loses that game is going home. Saudi Arabia scored eight goals in the group phase and they’re an attack-minded side so we need to up our game to avoid any surprises,” Brazil coach Ney Franco.

History beckons for Ecuador in France clash

Given that France and Ecuador have only met once – in any category – in a friendly, their upcoming clash could hardly be described as a classic encounter of world football. However, of the Round of 16 fixtures scheduled at the FIFA U-20 World Cup this week, it is certainly one of the most difficult to predict. The 2010 European champions are slight favourites on paper, but their performances on the pitch at Colombia 2011 have so far not lived up to pre-tournament expectations.

La Tricolor, meanwhile, looked more solid than spectacular during their three group matches. The Ecuadorians have never reached the quarter-final of a FIFA competition at any level, but the probable backing of local fans in Cartagena should provide them with some additional motivation to pull off a win.

The stakes
2011 marked a return to the FIFA U-20 World Cup for both France and Ecuador after a ten-year absence. Les Bleuets have performed well in South America before, reaching the quarter-finals in Argentina in 2001, where they were eliminated 3-1 by the host nation. That year also saw Ecuador’s only other appearance at the event, but they lost out to eventual runners-up Ghana in the Round of 16.

The Europeans’ form has improved since their disastrous 4-1 opening-match defeat by Colombia, but coach Francis Smerecki remains dissatisfied by their displays, which he views as inferior to their showings at the 2010 UEFA European Championship. The ambitious French side have targeted a semi-final place, but for this last-16 duel they will need to do without the services of the suspended Kalidou Koulibaly, one of the cornerstones of their defence.

Ecuador also suffered some disappointing moments during the group phase, but they steadied the ship with a resounding 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. That result would doubtless have pleased coach Sixto Vizuete, who has stated that his team have “got big dreams and will keep on dreaming”.

2 – The number of FIFA U-20 World Cup Round-of-16 wins secured by France, who remain undefeated at this stage of the competition (1997 versus Mexico and 2001 against Germany). On the flip side, 2 also represents the number of times that the French have lost in the knockout stage. Both defeats came at the hands of South American teams: Uruguay in 1997 and Argentina in 2001.

They’re a good team, but in qualifying and here at the tournament proper, they’ve struggled to impose their game. The stakes
Julen Lopetegui and Lee Kwang Jong both have all their players at their disposal as they plot their way into a quarter-final against Brazil or Saudi Arabia. The former will have some difficult decisions to make, given that he rested a couple of first-choice players during a 5-1 win over Australia in which the incomers impressed. Sergio Canales has dazzled after missing Spain's opener through injury, while Rodrigo and Alvaro Vazquez have both showcased their finishing prowess. The collective work of the Korea Republic team is regarded as their strength, though in Lee Ki Je and Kim Young Uk they have players capable of turning a game. Can they tick a box that three teams failed to in the first phase and find a way to neutralise La Roja's gorgeous passing football?

The stat
6 – goals is what made the first half of Spain's victory over Australia the joint-highest scoring period in FIFA U-20 World Cup history. The stakes
Given their outstanding record in Group D, when they notched up three emphatic wins against Guatemala, Croatia and Saudi Arabia, coach John Obuh’s highly motivated and well-drilled Nigerian side are certainly the form team in this tie. The canny coach will also hope his prolific pairing of Ahmed Musa and Olarenwaju Kayode can continue a purple patch that has seen them claim half their team’s goal tally to date.

Their defence may be impregnable, but three games into this edition and England are still without a win. This unwanted run goes back to a 1-0 victory over Mexico in 1997, a winless streak at FIFA U-20 World Cup final tournaments now stretching to 13 games. Though the pressure is on coach Brian Eastick to find a solution to his side’s difficulties in front of goal, the supremo remains defiant: “It’s no use scoring if you’re letting in three at the other end". Even so, on the evidence of the Nigerians’ performances so far, goalkeeper Jack Butland is sure to have plenty to do on Wednesday.

Hosts Colombia will come up against an old foe when they take on Costa Rica in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011. Tico coach Ronald Gonzalez was the man who scored the goal that downed Los Cafeteros in the group phase of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Saudi Arabia 1989, and will be hoping to inspire a repeat performance from the dugout on Tuesday.

The stakes
Colombia have been in mightily impressive form in front of their own fans so far, winning all three of their games in Group A while scoring seven goals and conceding just the one. Eduardo Lara’s side return to their El Campin stronghold in Bogota against Los Ticos, confident of taking another step forward in what would be Colombia’s first world title of any description. Although Lara is not expected to make any changes to a settled line-up, he may well be asking five of his players to watch their step, with Pedro Franco, James Rodriguez, Juan Cabezas, Jeison Murillo and Santiago Arias all on yellow cards and just another one away from missing a potential quarter-final.

The Central Americans were far less impressive in winning through to this stage, finishing third in Group C after winning one and losing two of their games, and they will be without the suspended Yeltsin Tejeda for this game. Coach Ronald Gonzalez knows what it takes to beat Colombia, however, having scored the goal that gave Los Ticos a first-round victory over a Cafetero team containing Oscar Cordoba, Jorge Bermudez and Ivan Valenciano at the FIFA U-20 World Cup some 22 years ago.

The stakes
Cameroon have come a long way in their three games so far. Held by New Zealand and then losing their cool in defeat to Portugal, the Junior Lions were on the brink of elimination going into their final group outing against tournament dark horses Uruguay. Martin Ndtoungou’s young side dug deep, however, to snatch an unlikely win and second place in the section, an outcome that has filled them with belief. On the downside, defender Ghislain Mvom is still unavailable due to the red card he picked up against the Portuguese.

Defeated 1-0 by Argentina and held to a goalless draw by England, Mexico owe their place in the Round of 16 to a comfortable win over Group F also-rans Korea DPR. That said, the CONCACAF giants have been in wasteful mood so far, missing a penalty against the English and squandering a hatful of chances against the North Koreans. Coach Juan Carlos Chavez will be hoping his charges are not quite so profligate against the dangerous Cameroonians.

The stat
53 - The number of goal attempts Mexico have so far had at Colombia 2011, only three of which have hit the back of the net, and one of those coming courtesy of a Korea DPR own goal.

“We don’t have anyone in midfield acting as a link man between the central defenders and the forwards, and I think that’s been causing us a lot of problems. The stakes
Though arguably with a better pedigree at this level, having made the Round of 16 at the 1999 edition of the tournament, Croatia will be taking nothing for granted against the Central Americans after disappointing thus far in Colombia. The Europeans started their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Saudi Arabia before succumbing 5-2 to Nigeria on Wednesday.

The other edge they have over their CONCACAF opponents is the two goals they scored against the African table-toppers. Guatemala are yet to find the target in Colombia and have conceded 11 times in their two outings, five against Nigeria and six against Saudi Arabia.

However, Ivan Grnja will be missing dead-ball specialist Zvonko Pamic, who is suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the group stage against Nigeria. This may provide a degree of comfort to beleaguered Guatemala coach Ever Almeida, whose underperforming front and back lines remain a riddle he has yet to solve.

With both sides already assured of qualifying from Group D of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011, Saturday’s clash between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria in the city of Pereira will decide which of these teams will top the section, after both recorded impressive victories over Croatia and Guatemala.

The stakes
As if to prove their 5-0 demolition of Guatemala was no accident, Nigeria crashed another five past a hapless Croatia on Wednesday, albeit with Flying Eagles goalkeeper Dami Paul being beaten twice along the way. The African side go into their contest with Saudi Arabia needing a draw to maintain first place in Group D, which would see them play their Round of 16 tie in Armenia.

For his part, Saudi Arabia coach Khalid Al Koroni is also keen to go back to Armenia, the scene of his side’s opening two triumphs. “The team likes Armenia,” he said. “We’re used to it!” To get there, though, the youngsters from the Gulf Kingdom will need to do better than during their last meeting with Nigeria – a draw in an international friendly on 13 March last year.

In what is sure to be a thrilling encounter, all eyes will be on Saudi goalkeeper Abdullah Al Sdairi and his stalwart back line. Their defence is yet to concede a goal in the group stage but now come up against a rampant Nigeria attack, spearheaded by the gifted Ahmed Musa with able support from Olarenwaju Kayode and Uche Nwofor.

Central to Autralia's hopes of victory will be whether Julen Lopetegui picks a full-strength side or rests his first-choice players. Spain are all but guaranteed top spot, but how important will the 44-year-old regard going through with a 100 per cent record?
